I am sitting here, in my room, looking out at the fog, thinking about how I can put my time here into words. My experience here had has been incredible, but incredible doesn’t even begin to cover it. I’m always trying something new; sometimes it’s small things like a new food, but other times it’s doing something that takes me out of my comfort zone.
My family has taken me in and treated me like other family member. I think that is one of the things that has helped me adjust so well. My mothers name is Sunneva; she is kind and extremely thoughtful. My fathers name is Jóannes, he is sweet and always greets me when we see each other. I have two sisters and a brother as well. Magnus is 19, I don’t see much of him though, because he works on a different island. Maria is 18, we get along really well! She drives me to school or we take the bus together. Some of my best times here so far have been with her just hanging out or talking. She was an exchange student in the past, so she understands what I am going through and helps me through it. My youngest sisters name is Daniella, she is 12. Daniella is very shy but it just makes her more cute. She feels shy talking english so she will blush and talk quietly when doing it. Seeing Maria and Daniella play around makes me miss my sister, Maree. Many things that they do are thing Maree and I do too. Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better host family!
The majority of my day is spent with my class. My class has 24 people in it, and we are together for all of our classes but one. They are all friendly. The hard thing is that some of them don’t like speaking english or it is hard for them. I have learned that being an exchange student isn't like just moving to another school, it is a lot different. You don’t really get the opportunity to pick your friends, you just have to wait for them to “choose you”. This being said the people that picked me are great friends and great people.
The hardest thing is still the language barrier. I know that will all come in time though. It’s hard being with a group of people because they will all speak Faroese. Classes are also hard for the same reason. It just makes me want to learn the language more though, learning the language will allow me to communicate better with others and become apart of the culture here.
I feel that it is hard to write blog posts now, because things here are starting to become normal to me. I have started to adjust to my new and fun life here.
